The Poet
Hassana Suleiman is a poet, a writer, and an advocate for climate justice. She's curious minded and likes to write about things and people.
The Poem
This is not just a song about flowers –
You embody royalty like a tulip
Lavender’s perfection with a poise
Loyal and dependable as an iris, purple, grey and moist
Refined and sophisticated like an orchid
With petals fancy, wet and tepid
You stick around and give good loving
Take over from the red rose
Like peonies in a jar so pretty and serving
You can sniff the brilliant hibiscus - and
Applaud the fascinating yet colorful distinction
Of the daffodil, dahlia and bright orange carnations
Walk in strides of innocence and beauty
Grab attention like the amaryllis or a daisy
Reek of optimism like the chrysanthemum
Anticipate greatness like the anemone
Light up a place like the sunflower
Be the hyacinth of the moment.
Like the lilies of ages and gardenias of life’s tower
I could liken you to a snapdragon, a patient torment
But you are graceful like baby’s breath
Exuding purity as the hydrangea
This is not a song about flowers, but of strength
Alas I cannot help but mention the Statia
How could I forget?
The Story
This poem about flowers was birthed during one of my random impulsive internet scrolling. I had discovered at that moment a new obsession (Flowers) and decided to make a poem about it. Enjoy.
